About this item

American Board and Table Games from the Liman Collection Gift

The games that entertained families from the 1840's to the 1920's offer a facinating window on the values, beliefs and aspirations of middle-class Americans. The Games We Played exhibition presents a rotating selection (every four months) of approximately 30 board games from the more than 500 examples generously donated to the Historical Society by Ellen Liman in 2000. The installation also includes two board game replicas, The checkered Game of Life (1866) and Round the World with Nellie Bly (1890), inviting visitors to test their luck and skill playing actual 19th-century games.
