About this item

Like its twin at Fulton Street, the Wall Street plaque was made by Rookwood Pottery. Also like Fulton Street it is an intricate scene, different from the simpler, earlier plaques: an eagle, a ship, a beaver. Here there is a sense of a foreground with grass and trees, a Dutch house in the background, and the wall in between. It is a north view of the wall which protected the northern edge of the settlement of Nieuw Amsterdam.

Images of the ceramic mosaics and plaques of the New York subways are chemically imbedded into our tiles. This process makes it possible to capture the detail and color of these pieces despite the decades of accumulated grime and muted subway lighting. We couldn't climb up and wash the panels, but properly lighted and photographed, they do come alive!

Decorative, high-glaze ceramic tile with metal hanger on back.
