The Office of Civil Defense was a United States federal emergency war agency active from 1941 to 1945. Boldly designed insignia were used to identify their volunteer services. Pictured here are the symbols for Civil Defense, Messengers, Bomb Reconnaissance Agent, and Emergency Food & Housing. During World War II over 400,000 New Yorkers enrolled in the Civilian Defense Corp, run by the Office of Civil Defense.
