Oertels (1823-1909) Pulling Down the Statue of King George III, New York City, 1852-53 The painting portrays the moment in 1776 when, in a fit of high patriotism following a local reading of the Declaration of Independence, rebellious New Yorkers, including the mischevious dog we call Liberty, destroyed the equestrian statue of King George III erected at Bowling Green.
