The Museum Store at the New-York Historical Society has chosen to feature the works of Haitian artisans during the exhibition, Revolution! The Atlantic World Reborn. We are honoring the struggles faced by participants in the 1791-1803 Haitian Revolution by highlighting the talents of their living descendants, and, at the same time, helping them to earn a living during their ongoing struggles in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake.
This papier-mch rooster is created by Caribbean Craft, a family owned and operated business that has been exporting from Haiti for over 10 years. Over 100 artisans assemble and paint products at their Port-au-Prince manufacturing site where the focus is on papier mache and metal products. Caribbean Craft also serves as the primary exporter for a number of additional rural artisan groups. They are members of the Fair Trade Federation. This rooster measures in at 22"x4"x16".
