This beautiful print is a reproduction of one of 37 alternate watercolor studies John James Audubon (1785-1851) made for the publication of the double elephant folio edition of The Birds of America (1827-38) engraved by Robert Havell Jr. (1793-1878). The one-of-a-kind alternate studies were not used in the publication. This American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) was painted around 1821.
