Looking back and looking ahead. The images on our commemorative mug bridge the century between the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art (or Armory Show) iconic pin and the 2013 New-York Historical Society exhibition graphic.
A flag from the American Revolution inspired the 1913 Armory Show emblem, an uprooted pine tree. It was chosen as a sign of the new, independent, even radical, spirit that the organizers wanted the show to convey. "The New Spirit," the motto of the Armory Show, remains a shorthand for the vibrant currents of change afoot in the visual arts, societal norms, cultural values and political beliefs of the early 20th Century.
