About this item

This long-lost and never-displayed work from the Historical Societys collections is titled Excelsior. The monumental oil on canvas by an unknown artist is thought to be an early iteration of the seal of New York. In 1777 New York shed its status as a British colony. By 1778 the Complete Arms of the State of New York had been finalized, incorporating a richly symbolic set of images that evoked classic republican virtues of Liberty and Justice, European heraldry, and the dawning potential of the New World, expressed in the state motto Excelsior, or Ever Higher. Printed on archival paper 11 x 14 inches
