About this item

F. Bartoli (active 1793-1976) painted the Seneca chief Cornplanter adorned with items that mark him as a person of importance and an ambassador between two cultures. His red cloak and silver jewelry were gifts presented by the Confederation Congress in 17+H886, while his feathered headpiece, tomahawk-pipe, and piercings reflect a European perspective on Native American aesthetic traditions. This portrait is from the museum's permanent collection.Printed on archival paper, mounted on a 1''-deep wook block. 6 x 4 x 1 inches
