Richard Welling (1926-)
World Trade Center Construction Site: Triptych Panorama Including the North (74 Stories) and South Towers (26 Stories) Under Construction, 1970
This large triptych is one of fourteen drawings donated by the artist that preserves Welling's obsession with the construction of the World Trade Center (WTC), 1966 - 72. The group belongs to a larger invaluable series of drawings by Welling documenting the construction of the building complex. From its genesis the artist was drawn to the site and recorded it from different geographical locations. Although the triptych includes the WTC towers, it is really a panoramic view of Manhattan; one that acknowledges yet contrasts with many of the earlier panoramic views of the city in the N-YHS collection. Richard Welling's drawings document the optimistic rise of the structures. The artist was born and still lives in Hartford, Connecticut, where he continues to draw and exhibit his work.
