Frdric-Auguste Bartholdi's watercolor reproduced here represents a view of his Liberty Enlightening the World in New York Harbor. The statue was presented to the United States in 1884 as a gift from the French nation. This small watercolor, really a souvenir, is inscribed to Mrs. Rosetta Lumley, a friend of Bartholdi's.
