The Flatiron Building: Fifth Avenue and Madison Square, New York City, 1907
The Flatiron Building has stirred the imagination of artists since its striking silhouette rose on the lower Manhattan skyline and its scaffold was removed in 1902-3. Surprisingly designated a landmark only in 1966, the Flatiron Building was briefly identified as the tallest building in the world and one of the first to use a steel frame. The structure remains one of the most recognized buildings in America.
